Summary:

Sensory processing is a term used to describe how the nervous system receives sensory stimulation through tactile, olfactory, gustatory, visual, auditory or vestibular senses, and the ability of the client to use that information to produce an adaptive response. Deficits in sensory processing are common among those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Those with deficits in sensory processing can have trouble participating in day-to-day activities because sensory information is not being interpreted effectively by the brain. It is important to select an appropriate tool to evaluate sensory processing so interventions meet the needs of the client.

Objectives:

The goal of this sensory processing continuing education program is to provide occupational therapists with information regarding sensory processing in those with autism spectrum disorders. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define sensory processing and its prevalence in the autism population
  • Demonstrate an understanding of evidence that supports sensory processing deficits in autism
  • Describe the assessment tools available to occupational therapists to measure sensory processing in autism

Very in depth and informational. I would definitely recommend this course to a friend who is interested in ASD and how those children process different sensory stimulations from the environment and peers.
