Summary:

This module presents a theoretical discussion of aging in place that includes an exploration of what aging in place is and how OTs can align their practices to meet the client’s and the community’s needs. The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process serves as a frame of reference. Data are presented and roles for OTs are considered that support the profession’s collaboration and leadership in these areas.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program (the first of a two-part series) is to increase understanding about barriers and enablers older adults encounter as they experience age-related changes in function. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe aging in place and its relationship to the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process
  • Describe potential roles for OTs in facilitating clients’ aging in place
  • Identify ways to evaluate clients’ needs and to design effective interventions relative to aging in place
