Nearly 70% of adults in the United States are overweight. Of those, more than one-third are obese. Shockingly, 20.6% of adolescents ages 12 to 19 are obese, 17.4% of children ages 6 to 11 are obese, and 9.4% of children ages 2 to 5 are obese. In 2014, Americans spent an average of $1,901 per obese individual to directly treat obesity and obesity-related diseases/conditions such as knee replacements from wear, medications for type 2 diabetes, and other complications seen less frequently in nonobese patients. Weight loss surgery (WLS) is no longer considered experimental or cosmetic; the National Institutes of Health suggests consideration of surgical weight-loss procedures for clinically severe obese people (BMI > 40 kg/m2) and those with a BMI greater than 35 kg/m2 who have certain medical conditions. This course will provide an overview of the bariatric surgical options and of the care of patients who have undergone bariatric surgery.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nurses, occupational therapists, and physical therapists with an overview of the care of patients who have undergone bariatric surgery. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Differentiate between surgical options available for severely obese individuals.
  • Identify psychosocial and quality-of-life issues affecting patients before and after bariatric surgery.
  • List metabolic and physiological considerations nurses must be aware of when caring for patients after bariatric surgery.
