Summary:

Dating as a concept has an outdated meaning for today’s young people. Few report dating as it was experienced in previous years; rather, many teens talk about “hooking up, going out, talking, or fooling around.” Dating violence, however, does occur within the social interactions of adolescents and young adults, with about 10% of all adolescents reporting some form of physical violence in their dating relationship. Boys and girls are just as likely to hit a dating partner as they are to be hit by a dating partner. This educational activity will provide an update on the topic and describe tools for identification and prevention of adolescent dating violence.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to update the ability of nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and social workers to recognize and treat adolescent victims of dating violence. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify signs and symptoms that may indicate an adolescent has experienced dating violence
  • Discuss risk factors for becoming a victim or perpetrator of violence within a dating relationship
  • Describe areas of focus for healthcare and prevention of dating violence
