Patients who sustain a concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury, often experience attention and memory problems, which have a negative impact on their ability to keep up with their daily personal and/or professional responsibilities. Besides difficulty with concentration and recall, these patients also complain of headaches, pain, lack of sleep and anxiety issues. A cognitive treatment regimen using only drill work to improve attention and memory is not likely to adequately meet their needs. There is a need to have functionally structured cognitive approaches to help educate these patients on ways to enhance their cognitive abilities in functional, creative ways and to assist them in compensating for their challenges effectively in order to facilitate a smooth transition into their living and/or work environments. Treatment in a group setting might help the rehabilitation process as well.

The goal of this continuing education program for speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists is to improve understanding of cognitive approaches to mild traumatic brain injury that are effective and functional. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the factors that affect attention, memory and information-processing skills in patients who have mTBI
  • Demonstrate meta-cognitive and skill-specific strategies and resources to improve attention, memory, and information-processing skills in both group and individual treatment sessions in patients who have mTBI
  • Identify the issues to be considered when designing individual and group cognitive training programs
