Summary:

Telehealth is a rapidly growing and effective means to deliver healthcare services to older adults. It provides a method to reach individuals who are unable to access traditional in-person services and may be a preferred way to receive services. The use of telehealth by occupational therapy practitioners is increasing in multiple settings. Despite common misconceptions, older adults are open to learning and using technology to receive healthcare services.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide the occupational therapy practitioner with a broad understanding of the multiple facets of using telehealth with an older adult client. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify considerations for reimbursement of occupational therapy services when using telehealth.
  • Recognize the variation in licensure requirements and the importance of reviewing state practice acts laws regarding the use of telehealth.
  • Organize a needs assessment to determine the level of preparedness to use telehealth.
  • Identify resources to provide technology support and continued evidence to support the use of telehealth in your practice.
