Therapy orders are often received within hours of a patient presenting to the emergency department following a stroke, with therapists making initial patient contact in the first 24 hours after admission. An early and organized mobility program coordinated by an interprofessional team is associated with a decrease in complications and improved functional outcomes. It is critical for therapy professionals to understand their role in mobilizing patients that have had a stroke. This course will discuss precautions to consider and current evidence-based strategies for providing care for this population. The goal of this continuing education program is to enhance physical and occupational therapists’ understanding of providing coordinated, evidence-based care to patients after cerebrovascular accident in the neurological critical care unit (NCCU).

The content in this course is applicable to physical and occupational therapy professionals.
After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Describe the role of the physical and occupational therapist in the evaluation and treatment of patients affected by stroke in the NCCU.
