Summary:

Since the world’s population of older adults is growing so rapidly, cognitive functioning among older adults is a serious and pertinent topic of discussion. Having intact cognition is often viewed as key to “successful aging” because with good thinking skills can remain independent. Mild cognitive impairment is explored as a harbinger of dementia, as well as the backdrop to share the evidence related to improving cognitive functioning and day-to-day skill performance. Nonpharmaceutical prevention, maintenance, adaptations, and compensatory measures related to cognitive skills are shared. A holistic approach to treatment should be employed due to the encompassing nature of the health of the brain on all of life’s activities. Understanding adult learning principles and the baseline level of cognitive performance of clients can help therapists design programs that truly promote optimal brain functioning and help clients live their best lives.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to discuss cognitive functioning among older adults. After completing this course, readers should be able to:
  • Describe why it is important to review mild cognitive impairment (mild neurocognitive disorder).
  • Describe how mild cognitive impairment, including decreased memory, fits into interventions for brain health.
  • Describe how holistic evidence-based concepts are used during work with clients to improve or maintain brain health.
  • Apply adult learning principles and individual tactics to ensure that older learners have an efficacious learning experience.
  • Explain why promoting optimal brain health is crucial for older adults’ successful aging process as well as for the country’s healthcare system.
